The Tennis Skirt: It’s Love
Tennis enthusiasts rejoice! With the return of both the Wimbledon and U.S. Open championships this summer, the sport is alive and well, and quite frankly, so is the style. Tennis, anyone?
This time last year, the white tennis skirt’s status as a summer staple was a sure sign that we were dressing for the events we were missing. After all, the crisp white skirt’s (and skort’s) resurgence into everyday wear came months before the cancellation of the sport’s greatest matches, two occasions fans could actually dress for from a distance. Emma Elwick-Bates said it best: “Blessed by bountiful sun, it’s easy to lament the usual events of the season,” especially when it comes to sports. Though, “we can still dress for the summer we want, and relive the highlights of years past and celebrate at home.”
Luckily, this year, a limited number of tennis fans can return to sitting courtside, watching their favorite athletes go head-to-head. For those continuing to celebrate the sport from home, the classic tennis skirt remains to be the activewear of choice over our wardrobe’s traditional summer workout attire––just ask the crowd of influencers posing courtside in white tennis skirts and filling our Instagram feeds.
Consider pairing a classic pleated silhouette by Tory Burch with an oversized rugby polo or a ’90s-inspired pullover for a vintage varsity look. Or keep it monochromatic with Ralph Lauren’s asymmetrical A-line, Brother Vellies’s cozy Cloud socks, and a plain white sneaker. Versatile and effortless, the silhouette is sure to serve the winning point for any occasion.
